The British Psychological Society Special Group in [...]
-
All chartered members of the British Psychological Society Special Group in Coaching Psychology (SGCP) have the opportunity to place an advert in The Coaching Psychologist about their work that is relevant to coaching psychology, e.g. coaching, courses (see section below for SGCP policy on training, training courses and supervision), consultancy around coaching. The adverts in The Coaching Psychologist will be costed according to size, from fullpage to quarter-page. The Coaching Psychologist is published three times a year.
-
All chartered members of the SGCP have the opportunity to place an advert on the Coaching Psychology Discussion List hosted by the SGCP about forthcoming events/ courses that are relevant to coaching psychology. The advert must present factual details (e.g. about speakers/facilitators, the venue, time and dates and the titles of event or courses). In addition, the advert must contain no more than 70 words providing some appropriate detail. Advertising on the Discussion List costs £20 + VAT per advert. The adverts will be released on a weekly basis usually on a Friday to the Discussion List in a digest format, i.e. all contained in one email. Adverts will be ordered chronologically on the basis of first in, first out (FIFO).
-
All chartered psychologists who are not members of the SGCP may also place an advert on the Discussion List hosted by the SGCP following the guidelines in point 2 above. Advertising for non-members of the SGCP on the Discussion List costs £40 + VAT per advert.
-
Publishers have the opportunity to advertise in The Coaching Psychologist. The publisher and the SGCP may have a reciprocal arrangement for the mutual benefit of both parties.
-
The editorial board of The Coaching Psychologist and the Discussion List moderator reserve the right not to accept an advert for The Coaching Psychologist or the Discussion List if it is thought to be prudent to do so in the light of the SGCP aims and objectives.
-
Relevant professional bodies (1) and the SGCP may have reciprocal arrangements to advertise freely on each others’ e-mail groups.
-
The International Coaching Psychology Review has advertising policies that are negotiated with the Australian Psychological Society Interest Group in Coaching Psychology and are stated within the Memorandum of Understanding. This strictly limits the type of advert and advertiser and is normally reserved for BPS SGCP, APS IGCP announcements and some publications.
-
Representatives of the SGCP will not enter into protracted dialogue with individuals or organisations over the acceptability of specific adverts.
A brief explanation of the SGCP Training, Training Courses and Supervision Advertising Policy
Please note that the SGCP does not recognise any specific training courses and currently does not make recommendations regarding individual training requirements. However, in the UK, there are a wide range of courses, mostly involved with coaching and a few with coaching psychology.
The Society approves certain DPsych courses some of which permit research into a wide range of areas including coaching psychology. The SGCP actively encourages coaching psychology research by our members taking Society-approved DPsychs and PhDs.
If you are considering enrolling on a course, we suggest the questions you might ask are:
-
Is the course UK University accredited? If unsure check with the Department of Education and Skills website: http://www.dfes.gov.uk/recognisedukdegrees/annex4.shtml
-
Do experienced Chartered Psychologists teach on the programme?
-
Do the Chartered Psychologists take responsibility for the programme?
Our recommendations offer limited but useful protection for our members and this is reflected in our advertising policy whereby clear accountability can be seen as Chartered Psychologists take responsibility for the courses.(2)
We have a reciprocal arrangement with the Association for Coaching, a professional membership body, to take responsibility for, and to promote each others’ courses on our e-mail groups.
Adverts offering supervision to our members will only be accepted if the supervisor is a Chartered Psychologist. Our members are encouraged to verify the relevant qualifications and experience of the supervisor.
As the SGCP Committee continues to focus on these issues, these guidelines, as well as those regarding who can call themselves coaching psychologists may change. Our website will keep you updated on the details.
1 - As listed in SGCP’s ‘Strategy for relationships with other non-profit organisations involved in the profession of coaching’ document.
2 - Please note that the Society now permits Chartered Psychologists to identify coaching psychology as an area of work both for the online ‘Find a psychologist service’ as well as the paper version of the Directory of Chartered
