Two Key Tools for the Exectutive Coach's Tool Box: Goal Integration, Frames and Style

Tony Grant

7th July, 2010 5.30pm-8.30pm (Registration from 5.00pm )

An evening workshop to be held at City University, London, EC1V 0HB

Using case studies and exercises, workshop explores two key tools in the executive coach’s tool box: 1) Goal hierarchy methodology, which links values to goals and to actions. This helps coaches develop integrated conceptualisations, maximises the effectiveness of coaching, and generates insights for the coachee. 2) An extension of Bowman and Deal’s Frames of Reference model (originally comprised of "Structural", "Human", "Political" and "Symbolic" frames). Frames of References are the implicit beliefs, values and assumptions that guide our thinking and that govern the goals we focus on. The skilled use of Frames of References, when adapted for use in coaching, can provide a number of alternative perspectives from which to construct solutions, particularly if this is done is with reference to the coachee’s personality style. There will also be opportunities to discuss the latest work of the University of Sydney’s renowned Coaching Psychology Unit.

The workshop aims to:

  • Give a practical overview of the use of goal hierarchy methodologies
  • Discuss Frames of References and their adaptation to the coaching process
  • Provide practical, ‘hands-on’ activity to develop in-the-moment coaching skills

Key features:

  • Theoretically grounded coaching skills for increased effectiveness as an executive coach
  • The development of transferable coaching skills and use of real-life case studies
  • Discussion of latest work of University of Sydney’s renowned Coaching Psychology Unit
  • A small number of moderately humorous and non-libellous anecdotes will be briefly mentioned in passing.
