Motivation is seen as a crucial ingredient to the success of any venture. It is a key element in moving people to action and in enabling them to attain valued outcomes from goals they choose to pursue.
This paper explores and discusses what people in executive/business and management roles have to say about self-motivation and what moves them to action. It attempts to identify the motives (factors) these individuals perceive as most strongly capable of facilitating and enabling their self-motivation. The discussion, which focuses on the intrinsic/extrinsic construct, and also considers the influence of values, beliefs and emotions, is supported by the findings from individuals’ responses to a small survey, and observations gained by the author through working with coaching clients.
