This workshop will cover challenging aspects of goal setting. Theoretically it discusses Bateson’s use of logical levels which has been assimilated into NLP methodologies. When people set goals they inevitably create a ‘stretch’ for themselves. However, one challenge is how do you get this right? If the "goal" and thinking about it invokes "unresolved issues" at a different logical level, the individual will create a double bind, leaving them frustrated, unfulfilled and demoralized. Conversely, if people set goals they know they can achieve, they do not develop, and plateau out, again becoming frustrated, unfulfilled and demoralized.
This event will look at the theoretical underpinning as to why a cornerstone of coaching psychology; goal setting, is problematic at best, creating double binds and target culture mentality which does not account for process and complexity. This workshop does not require any prior knowledge.
You will learn:
- Key principles from goal setting theory
- A model for goal setting to reduce double binds
- Practical ways of working with clients in their goal setting
- Get the opportunity to try out the model, ask questions and reflect on how this can enhance your practice as a coaching psychologist
Bruce Grimley (CPsychol, AFBPsS) is a Chartered Psychologist, who specialises in personal development using hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic programming, (NLP). He specialises in development in the workplace as many employers and employees find that problems which prevent them performing well in the work place, also prevent them from living their lives to the full outside of the work place. Bruce is an accredited trainer of NLP (JSA ,ANLP), an accredited coach (Association for Coaching). He is engaged in his PhD at Surrey University where he is discovering whether NLP patterns can usefully produce sustainable second order changes thus demonstrating the added value coaching can bring to organisations.
